Chickpeas are indeed the main ingredient in hummus. They are also known as garbanzo beans. ;D

@ChurchPunkMom, I would have to agree, there are some good Indian places in Des Moines and it helps when your big sister goes there all the time so she can tell you what you like to eat.

I am totally cracking up at your description of the food. I am married to an Indian man (born in Minnesota, so I’m not really sure that counts), and he has had to explain some dishes to me multiple times over the years we’ve known each other. I have my first Turkish breakfast this weekend with some friends, and I’m a little nervous about the food!
