The Baby Shower Where I Got My Tattoo: A Photo Essay

by Miss Britt on June 10, 2009

Saturday afternoon, I went to a baby shower.

I’ve been to a lot of baby showers, but this one was different.

This baby shower was for my beautiful friend Faiqa, who is a Pakistani American with a butt load of middle eastern friends.  And while you might not think that this fact alone is significant, think for a minute about putting one very loud, very American white girl in the middle of a room full of practicing muslims of Pakistani and Indian descent.

My chances of offending someone inadvertenly were as high as I was that time I ordered one of everything off the Village Inn menu.

In an effort to deflect attention from my own offensiveness, I brought backup.

Everyone knows California is the most offensive state

OK, I didn’t technically bring her.  Faiqa invited Hilly because she likes her or something.  Whatever.  I threatened to put dog poop on her front door if she didn’t show up and insisted that she sit by me.

ANYway – me, Hilly, and a bunch of brown people.

OK – fine.  There were other white people there.

God it’s hard to write a post about my foray into a new culture when there is all of this cultural diversity and accpetance already going on.

no-blondes

Like most baby showers I’ve been to, there was a ton of food for the guests to gorge themselves on.  But instead of finger sandwiches and pasta salad, we were served authentic Indian food.  This was my first time eating Indian food and I was a little nervous about how it would taste and whether or not I would like it.

Which I said out loud to a room full of people because I am bursting with tact and class.

Luckily, Faiqa walked through the serving line with me and graciously explained the names and main ingredients of each dish.  I took pictures and careful notes so that I would be able to remember what I was eating long enough to share it with you later.

yogurt

Everything is better with tortilla chips.

Chick Peas does not sound like something I would like. At all.

Indian people love chick peas.

Man I’m glad Faiqa took the time to graciously explain all of this to me.

sandwiches

OK, so you may have a hard time finding the recipe for these dishes on Google.  I’m sure you can ask Faiqa.  And you should.  Because despite my tactfully hidden conerns about eating Indian food – everything was delicious.  Well, the cold yogurt thing was OK – but everything else was delicious.  And I bet it would be even more delicious with tortilla chips.

I’m just saying.

After eating, it was time for the tattoo artist.

Yes, the tattoo artist.

I went to Faiqa’s baby shower and came home with a tattoo.

tattoo

Maybe I didn’t have to pin the neckline of my dress closed after all.

While I was getting my tattoo, the rest of the party goers were opening baby presents and talking about babies and babies babies babies blah blah blah.

But the important part is, I got a tattoo.

And it’s totally permanent for next 1-2 weeks.

@Miss Britt, LOL! there is now, honey. ;) I live in Iowa and there are a few decent Indian places here in Des Moines.

Now Mexican food… there is definitely a lack of good Mexican food here. So we have to make our own.

@ChurchPunkMom, I would have to agree, there are some good Indian places in Des Moines and it helps when your big sister goes there all the time so she can tell you what you like to eat.

Did you know that other states also have “Iowa City” too? Like Iowa City, FL. There’s a thought.

Ack! I am so totally jealous. I love, love, love Indian food, but can so rarely get it because there are no Indian restaurants where I live. Fortunately, I’m in Seattle just now, where I’ve eaten at Indian restaurants twice in two days. :-)

I have seen Faiqa comment on some of the blogs I also read and I find her to be a quite interesting person, based on her comments. And so, it is of little surprise that she would have such a cool baby shower.

    And I love that tattoo.

    Miss Britt Reply:

@Faiqa, DAMMIT! See, this is why I need to stick to categorizing you as “brown people”. Do you know how much I agonized over how to write this out?? You’re not from the same place, you don’t practice the same religion – IT’S LIKE YOU’RE TOTALLY DIFFERENT PEOPLE!

I loved The Village Inn! The Inn’s Breakfast was my favorite. Everything was stacked up (eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, cheese, yum.)

I was invited to a friend’s graduation from law school several years ago. She was from Nepal and all her Nepalese (?) friends and family were there. It was a total blast. Interesting Music and Food and Booze and Dancing! Her family was so friendly and happy. A really good memory.

Now I’m more sorry I couldn’t come! I love henna tattoos and I’ve never had Indian food either. And I adore Faiqa. And I so could have balanced out the white/brown ratio a little. And I could have added like four words to Hilly’s three.

The only thing – and I mean THE ONLY thing, I miss about a certain horrific ex-boyfriend was his talent when it came to homemade Indian cooking. I would seriously take him back for one more night if I could get one of his meals. I’d just have to lock up my husband for a bit.

Maybe you should have been more vocal about Paris… who knows, maybe Faiqa has some rich relatives who would be willing to fly you and your charming husband on a great vacation, if for no other reason than to make you stop inquiring about the food so rudely.

I love photo essays of yummy tasting food.

However, I just want to point out that the woman you refer to as Hilly is actually from Florida.
