I need to up my Netflix

by Miss Britt on February 28, 2008

Spoiler alert: hints for this weekend’s contests are at the bottom of this entry!

Holy. Shit. You people really came through for me on last Sunday’s contest. I now have well over 30 movies in my queue (that’s British for “holding pattern” or “line”) over at Netflix. Which means I am probably going to need to bump myself up from the 1-at-a-time plan.

It also means that it was damn near fucking impossible to pick a winner!

Between your comments and posts, you gave me literally over 100 movies to choose from.

Of course, some of them were crap. (Seriously people - Facing the Giants? I love you but, UGH. That movie is shitastic! I threw food at my husband the entire time he tried to watch it. It’s movies like that that give Christians an uncool reputation. Blech!)

And some of them that even I had seen before. Namely:

  • The Princess Bride
  • My Cousin Vinny
  • Lake Placid
  • Juno
  • Moulin Rouge
  • what women want
  • Pirates of the Caribbean 1 & 2
  • Love Actually (on of my all time favorites!)
  • Bourne Ultimatum
  • Get Shorty
  • Be Cool
  • Swordfish
  • High Fidelity
  • Empire Records
  • To Kill a Mockingbird
  • Sabrina
  • Breakfast at Tiffany’s
  • The Devil Wears Prada
  • Walk the Line
  • Talladega Nights
  • Radio
  • Chasing Amy (my personal favorite Kevin Smith movie)
  • Clerks I & II
  • Mallrats
  • Baby Boy (bet you didn’t know there were white people who saw that movie!)
  • Fools Rush In
  • I Now Pronouce You……Chuck and Larry
  • Knocked Up
  • Super Troopers (this movie is retarded, btw)
  • Blades of Glory
  • Office Space
  • Hairspray
  • The Life of David Gale

After sorting through the ones I had already seen, I was still left with a long list. Of course, I immediately axed anything Horror. The one and only thing I am not “allowed” to do by my husband is watch scary movies. Because I am a big fat cry baby who cannot sleep unless the locks are checked three times. Maybe four.

I also cut out anything that had a lame ass synopsis, was based on a video game, or was just too sci-fi out there for me.

Which leave us with, the contenders…

These are the movies I actually added to my queue (this is British for “holding pattern” or “line”) as a result of this contest (meaning I hadn’t previously done so):

  • Giant
  • Thank You for Smoking
  • A Mighty Heart
  • Dreamgirls
  • Waitress
  • Quinceanera
  • My Wife is an Actress
  • Little Miss Sunshine
  • A Bronx Tale
  • The Good Shepherd
  • The Last King of Scotland
  • Remains of the Day
  • The Great Escape
  • The Departed
  • Roman Holiday
  • live free or die hard
  • Snowcake
  • Across the Universe
  • The Story of Us
  • Reign Over Me
  • Why Did I Get Married?
  • Music and Lyrics
  • Black Book
  • Once
  • Dear Frankie
  • Eastern Promises
  • Rendition
  • Crash
  • Casablanca

I am looking forward to seeing all of these, and truthfully, a little embarrassed that some are on the list. (I mean really, how the hell have I NOT seen Casablanca?!?) But there can only be one winner.

Which movie did I move to the top of my queue*?

Waitress

To be fair, my decision and sudden need. to. see. this. movie. right. now was influenced by Dave2’s absolutely gushing over it. But the first person to suggest it to me here, and therefore our winner, was Kapgar.

Shoot me an email and let me know what email address to send your gift certificate to!

Thank you everyone for your advice. And.. um.. if you don’t mind. Could you give me a little more? Is there any movie that I absolutely should NOT waste my time seeing? And if so, why not?

This Sunday’s contest will be centered around the return of The RAP Sheet.

You do remember The RAP Sheet, right?

*That’s British for “holding pattern” or “line”.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. It’s a pretty special film.

  2. avitable February 28, 2008 12:24 am

I want to watch it too when you get it. That’s one I haven’t gotten around to seeing.

And Q is British for the guy who gives fancy gadgets to Bond.

  3. Hilly February 28, 2008 12:27 am

That is a great movie and a most excellent choice. I cannot believe you did not take my suggestion of “How to Bang Your Way to the Top!” The nerve! ;)

The movie that won is a movie that I wouldn’t pay money to see if somebody put a gun to my head. LOL

Of course I could be wrong. But I don’t normally do romantic comedies.

I should have tailored my recommendations more towards chick movies. Oh well, maybe next time. ;-)

Out of curiosity, have you seen that movie with Robin Williams, “What Dreams May Come” or “Bicentennial Man” (I think that’s right)?

Neither of which I own, (don’t take that to mean anything you know I don’t DO movies usually) but, the first still sort of haunts me. The second I caught in the middle of the night and actually sort of got hooked into it (I happen to adore Oliver Platt and he is in it).

Lake Placid is one of my all time favorite movies. It ranks up there with Tremors, Godfather 1&2 and Jaws. If you are looking for classics you might also try the Treasure of the Sierra Madre with Humphrey Bogart. That’s the movie with the famous line “Batches! Batches! We doan need no stinkin Batches!”

Then just because it is St Patrick’s day soon, get The Quiet Man and see who the fuck Maureen O’Hara was in this academy award winning movie.

For chick flicks Mrs. Y2K loves the Notebook (which bores the crap out of me) Wedding Date and Failure to Launch. Classics like Tootsie, Mr. Mom and Mannequin.

Y2Kette still loves 10 things I hate about you, Lost Boys, and a variety of gore fest flicks you don’t wanna know. She calls them date movies.

  8. Kimberly February 28, 2008 6:23 am

I’ve only seen 2 on your final list - The Last King of Scotland and Little Miss Sunshine.

    Both are amazing.

I was going to make a snide remark about the US English language only being 200 yrs old and Queue being around for a lot longer than that but then I realised that thats why one is called US English and the other is English because they are two different languages oh and the English version is right

I am not allowed to do horror movies either. Apparently the fact that I cannot sleep for weeks after is a bad thing. :) Love Actually is a favorite of mine also.

Uh, don’t knock the movies based on video games… watch Doom. Sure the movie sucks big time, but you have The Rock as total man candy the whole way through and the best thing is that your man is more than happy to watch it too. Win-win.

*GASP* Chasing Amy is your favorite Kevin Smith movie??? It used to be mine too!!!

Well, at least until my ex-wife turned into a lesbian.

Now I’m all about Mallrats because it has Shannen Doherty getting screwed in a tight, uncomfortable place… like the back of a Volkswagen.

I am assuming you like general box office hits? Because there are some really good other movies.

    “Life is Beautiful”
    “The Great Lebowski”
    “Very Bad Things”

    and of course:

    “Battlestar Galactica!”

You can also rent TV series. I recommend:

“Dead Like Me” which you can insta-view.

And you’ve never seen “Office Space”? FOR SHAME! FOR SHAME!! That was filmed in my hometown.

My favorite Kevin Smith movie is Jersey Girl.

    …………..

Just kidding. Sort of. (What? It’s CUTE!)

Britt, I cannot believe you were EVER at one movie at a time!

And, I bet you get Waitress before I do because I’m totally mismanaging my Netflix queue.

  19. Honeybell February 28, 2008 9:26 am

I’ve seen about half of the movies on the final, they were all fabulous! Than You For Smoking is a big favorite.

Do NOT under any circumstances see a movie called Session Nine. Some friends carried on about it like it was the next Oscar winner, ugh (”Starring David Caruso” should have been a big fucking clue). Oh the minutes I’ll never get back . . .

I’ve been wanting to see “Waitress.” Excellent choice. But you had many.

I should have entered, but I didn’t have time to consider, so I’ll throw you a freebie: Auntie Mame. If you haven’t seen it, do it. It’s one of my all-time favs.

  21. Clown February 28, 2008 9:48 am

I enjoyed Waitress right up until the end. I didn’t hate it but. Well, hard to describe without spoiling. You’ll most likely enjoy it though as I think I was in the minority.

Along with Baby Boy I want to suggest Men in Black II.

  22. Allyson February 28, 2008 9:49 am

Ahem. The Evil Dead Series is NOT SCARY. It is funny, and it’s Bruce Campbell, man! Nothing Bruce Campbell does could possibly be considered anything but funny.

But you know, I never said my movie choices were for everybody. I love them, but that’s why hollywood makes so damn many movies, I guess.

  23. Miss Britt February 28, 2008 10:05 am

Dave2: I’ll have to do a review or something and let you know.

avitable: you won’t like it. You’re not invited. :-P

Hilly: oh, that’s because I OWN that one.

    turnbaby: slacker.

Jay: I think all of your recommendations made the queue, except for the ones I’d already seen.

Amy: I haven’t seen What Dreams May Come - someone suggested it, but I don’t think I added it.

    Bicentennial Man was surprisingly good.

Y2K Survivor: Tremors!?! A classic?!? That’s the one about the giant earth worms, right??

Kimberly: so then, you need Netflix as bad as me?

L: I wasn’t making fun of the British English!

Well, except for how you spell color. That’s just crazy man.

kapgar:  Now I know I’m in your “skim” file.

Karen: yep, that’s me too! LOL

    *pixie*: I’ll remember that.

Maybe I should get that for Avitable for his next birthday…

kapgar: and congratulations, by the way.

ADW: The Rock doesn’t do it for me. I’m just not into Beefcake Man Candy.

You know what makes me swoon? A guy who can quote Shakespeare.

NYCWD: yep, it is. Seeing as how my ex-wife has yet to turn into a lesbian, it will probably remain that way for a while.

Rich: really? I might need to rewatch that now. It’s been forever since I saw it so I can’t draw any parallels.

The Absurdist: I’ve seen Office Space! Loved it!

    Battlestar Galactica - um, no.

But Life is Beautiful did get added.

    Poppy: OMG for SHAME Poppy!!

Reason #3 I can never take movie recommendations from you ever again!

(I’m still pissed about I Am Legend! :crazywife: )

Honeybell: I’ve never heard of that one!

Finn: I’ve never heard of that one either. I’ll have to look that up.

Clown: you are a fucker. :-P

I think you and Mrs. Avitable need to go to movies together. I bet you hated the ending to Knocked Up too, didn’t you?

Allyson: BTW - are we still on for Saturday?

  24. Poppy February 28, 2008 10:07 am

(My real favorite Kevin Smith movie is Clerks proper.

And I told you that I Am Legend would make you cry. What part of that was misleading?)

  25. Miss Britt February 28, 2008 10:10 am

But you said it was good and that I should see it!

I walked out of the theater pissed! It’s a good thing I didn’t have your number or you’d have gotten a text ful!

  26. Poppy February 28, 2008 10:18 am

What didn’t you like about it so I can know what to advise you against in the future? If you say “everything” then that doesn’t quite narrow it down. I’m serious, you tell me 5 things about it you didn’t like and I’ll understand how to help you out with movie choices in the future.

And … well, I think Adam has my number if you ever do want to chew me out in a text message. If he doesn’t have it then email works too.

  27. Poppy February 28, 2008 10:19 am

  30. Miss Britt February 28, 2008 10:26 am

    Yep, I did.

What I didn’t like was the pacing and the ending, it was all wrong.

A movie should look kind of like a bell… you know?

And the entire time I was waiting for the point, and then all of a sudden, it was done. And it was all… for nothing.

  31. ADW February 28, 2008 10:27 am

I am not into big bulky dudes… normally. I think I like him because of his comedic chops. There is nothing like a hot, sexy, funny guy. The Rundown was hilarious and anything with Christopher Walken in it is superdupercool anyway.

  32. Miss Britt February 28, 2008 10:27 am

oops - sorry, that was @ Poppy

Debkitty - I’m looking forward to it.

Shelli - I’m glad I’m not the only one! LOL

  33. Poppy February 28, 2008 10:39 am

I understand about the pacing. It was a lot of sloooooooow for not that much action. But, that’s about the only thing that stayed true to the book. :)

As for the ending, I thought that was a big pile of shittiness as well.

Please don’t use that one movie as your reason to never see a movie I suggest again, because that one was an odd duck in the grand scheme of movies I see.

How about obscure Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead? If you can get past Philip Seymour Hoffman’s eternal creepiness that movie is fanfuckingtastic. It does flashbacky stuff, though. If you don’t like it when movies can’t stay linear/chronological then nevermindthatone. If it does sound appealing, it’s not out yet but that’s what the Saved list is for!

  34. Clown February 28, 2008 10:48 am

    I did.
Not in the same way I hated the Waitress ending, but yes… More annoyance than anything.

  35. Miss Britt February 28, 2008 10:51 am

If you say “it was soooo unrealistic” I will slap the shit out of you. I swear.

  36. Britt's Mom February 28, 2008 10:57 am

    Laughing….

You OWN “How To Bang Your Way To The Top” - whatever that is?!?!?!

    Bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Gosh, I’m still stuck on “The Golden Child” and of course, as we’ve discussed, my three favorite movies of all time - “Gone With the Wind”, “Steel Magnolias” and “Beaches”. Although that one where Drew Barrymore is pregnant and her boyfriend is a cop and someone dies - what is that again?

I’m way late to the game, but I wanted to throw out an (obscure) recommendation for you. The only warning that needs to accompany this movie is that it will likely make you cry like a wee baby. But it’s really, really good, and the child actors in it are simply amazing (and normally most child actors get on my nerves).

Yes Tremors is about the giant “Graboids” not worms, ya philistine! And it has one of the most classic line ever in the movies when Kevin Bacon digs up a “Graboid” they had just accidentally killed and announces, “I’ve found the ass end!”

    It’s pure art dude!

  40. Y2K Survivor February 28, 2008 12:42 pm

Oh ok sometimes bad movies are fun to watch. Two more of my favs are Idle Hands and the most excellent Reanimator.

Reanimator was such a bad B movie you can’t help but laugh at the poor actig and awful story line and when the star kills his boss, then jams the severed head onto a spike letter holder and reanimates it, only to have it bitch and threaten like a severed boss’s head would tend to bith and threaten… You know you are mining movie gold!

  41. srah February 28, 2008 12:48 pm

I don’t remember what I recommended last time, but if you don’t mind subtitles, I recommend Tampopo (a Japanese movie all about food) and Amelie (a French film about the small pleasures in life).

  42. Kyra Sutra February 28, 2008 12:57 pm

Britt’s Mom: it’s called Boys On The Side - LOOOOVE it.

And no Mom, I don’t own that. I don’t think “that” really exists. LOL

Emily: I LOVE movies that make me cry!! Seriously!!

Eileen: I can now say someone commented on my site when they were on their book tour. My life is complete.

Remember to tell Oprah about me!

Y2K Survivor: dude, you need to see some new movies too.

srah: subtitles normally drive me crazy.

    Kyra Sutra: it sounded scary!!!

barbra: I’ve seen the first Bourne movie, but I don’t think I can watch the rest now having read the books. They are so, so off from the books.

Annie: I’ve heard the ending isn’t totally sad, so I’m thinking I might watch it.

Crys: now I’m guaranteed to be hearing you singing while I watch it.

    Clown: Waitress I haven’t seen.

Knocked Up I have seen. And I loved it. And people who have ever met Jared and I aren’t allowed to say it’s not realistic.

  49. Kyra Sutra February 28, 2008 4:30 pm

    No way! LOL! It’s hysterical!

This guy moved to this small town and terrorizes the owner of this boat store who he claims is his daddy. By terrorizing I mean calling him every thirty seconds and saying weird shit like, “Whatcha got down at that boat store for an itchy butt?” He calls him, like, a thousand times and sends him gifts like a Number One Dad mug and underwear. This old man is one of those southern bigot assholes and he keeps retaliating to this dude by cussing him out and it’s so funny.

Unless I’m just weird. But it’s not at all scary…LOL.

I’ve only seen Knocked Up once so it’s a bit blurry. Still, I really enjoyed the movie. One of the funniest of last year.

I was annoyed with the ending in that one, but only slightly. I’m not even saying it wasn’t realistic, just annoying. Let me know after you’ve seen Waitress and I can expand. I might try to watch Knocked Up again soon so I have more of a basis as I currently I can’t even remember what bugged me. (Although Waitress I know exactly what it was)

    Fuck.
I’m sorry I ramble so much.

I know your contest is over but here are a couple to add to the queue: How To Make an American Quilt, Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood and American Gangster. best movie is what most people say when I asked.

The Diving bell and the butterfly.

Over and over again, I keep hearing it. I haven’t gone to the movies in
7 years, and have a date to see this
next week, happily abandoning my big screen (from the previews) looks well worth it.

From the movies I have seen, Crash
has to be up there - and was better
the second time around (from a person who doesn’t like to see anything twice)

    Enjoy!
