Priorities

by Miss Britt on October 26, 2007

A list of things I’d like to get done in the foreseeable future:

* Decorate my daughter’s room - which is going to include a total overhaul, right down to a new bed

* Paint and decorate my living room

* And dining room. And kitchen. And hallway. And front “formal living room”.

*And also my bedroom, bathroom, and the guest bedroom.

*Install a bar in the Great Room

*Make my husband mount the monstrous TV on the OTHER wall in the living room.

*Add tile to the back splash in the kitchen

*Add pendulum and task lighting to the kitchen. Which will probably help my guacamole making.

*Learn how to make guacamole. *sigh*

*Figure out what to do to the color of my hair that will make it pretty, and mask my sad, sad, dishwater roots.

*Start working out again. *sigh*

*Quit smoking

*Wax my damn eyebrows

*And possibly cut my hair

*Redo my blog. Major. Have so many awesome ideas.

Things I find myself doing instead that cause me to not complete a single thing on prior list:

*Reading other people’s blogs

*Watching TV

*Take kids to daycare/school, go to work, work, pick up kids, dinner, baths, bed. Rinse. Repeat.

I am no fool. Obviously, something from list two is going to have to get axed if list one is ever going to happen.

Clearly, those little bastards need to become more independent.

But but… ehm… don’t these last 3 activities reaaaaallly belong at the top of the list?

  2. The Absurdist October 26, 2007 6:15 am

Girl, I am so with you, except on the kids and hubby thing. I am so all alone all by myself (small violin playing in background) that I have to hire a husband to come help me with chores (my handyman). I actually do call him “hire a husband”.

As for the rest, do you know I actually schedule on my calendar to wax my eyebrows, clean my ears (I know, TMI), shave my legs, etc? Otherwise, it would never get done.

Go find yourself a Mexican (oh wait, it’s Orlando, go find yourself a Puerto Rican or Cuban) and have them come over to show you how to make guacamole.

In my old age, I have learned something very important; I can’t do it all. I have learned to delegate that which I have no time to do, or can’t do because I suck at it. Now, to be fair, I am at a place in my life where I can afford an assistant on an as-needed basis. But here’s how I look at it:

I bill out at X dollars an hour. I pay an assistant at X dollars an hour. It’s prudent for me to bill and hire someone to do all that crap I can’t do, or don’t know how to do, for myself. Not everyone can do that, but what I used to do is find a high school student that needed the money and wanted to learn how to take care of things for me. I usually went with some kid that wanted to put “assistant” on their resume instead of “McDonald’s”. Duh, not resume. College application. Better to show that they worked in “an office” than at McDonald’s.

So, you have some options. But I swear by getting some help to free up your time. In this day and age, with mothers working, kids in 8000 activities, home offices (which we never used to have), and all that other happy crap, we can’t do it all. And we try, because that’s how we grew up with other women around us.

Get some help. Find a high school student (get one in an honor society; some total geek with no life) and hire them to help you out with various activities that they can handle. No, they can’t wax your eyebrows for you, but they can handle other things like going to the grocery store, running other errands for you, etc. Get that little crap off your plate that any 16+ year old can do for you…

  3. avitable October 26, 2007 8:10 am

And this is why I hire people to do work for me. 90% of that other list could be done by someone else.

If you go to get your eyebrows waxed, I want to watch so I can laugh.

And I’ll help you quit smoking.

  4. DeannaBanana October 26, 2007 8:13 am

I’ll come and help you paint. I’ll owe you, after tonight.

  5. themuttprincess October 26, 2007 8:41 am

Hire someone to do most of the first list! It may not be as hands-on or whatever, but you will be happy the tasks are complete.

  6. Rich | Championable October 26, 2007 9:03 am

Oh, dude. Quitting smoking is the one to do. It sucks ass SO bad to quit, but when it’s over, the world is your track and field.

  7. hellohahanarf October 26, 2007 9:04 am

forget waxing your eyebrows…you have 2 and that is all that matters.

while i can appreciate folks saying you should hire help, i just LOVE to be the control freak who does most things myself. granted not a lot gets accomplished, but when it does? blam! i feel awesome!

good luck in finding time for everything. it ain’t easy.

  8. NotaGranny October 26, 2007 9:23 am

Umm..we’ve been in our house 10 years now and I haven’t painted the master bedroom yet….guess I need to start on that.

    Thanks a lot.

  9. Mr. Fabulous October 26, 2007 9:26 am

My eyebrows need waxing too. Can we go together? Maybe we can make a spa day of it!

  10. Y2K Survivor October 26, 2007 9:51 am

OK there is a new drug called Chantax (or something like that) that a local DR here says in 4-6 months will make you just toss your cigarettes away. It fucks with your brain receptors ability to absorb nicotine and a side effect is about 12% of the people using the drug have horrifically realistic nightmares that can lead to a few minor psychotic events and possible shooting death by a neighbor in fear for their life from a strange ranting Blonde chick in the middle of the night. ….or so People Magazine claims.

Oh yeah, and just to help out on your TV watching: http://www.greyswriters.com/
Hey if you haven’t checked out the blog lately, the last two entries made the last two shows WAY better, in my mind at least.

  11. ADW October 26, 2007 10:02 am

This is why I am trying to get a sign-in to this year’s voting to lower the driving age to 10.

  12. deb October 26, 2007 10:05 am

Hire a teeny bopper band geek to help you out and free up some time!

Hair color and waxing, Please don’t try these at home!!

  13. Miss Britt October 26, 2007 10:15 am

    DutchBitch: SHHH!

The Absurdist: Hmmm… OR I could stop watching as much TV.

avitable: you can’t hire someone to pick out paint.

DeannaBanana: Ha! My plan is working!

I mean, um, thank you :-)

themuttprincess: I like decorating. And I’m already paying the painter with sex and dinners. I jut have to pick the colors.

Rich: I’ve done it. A dozen times. I think that needs to be LAST so I can survive the rest. :-)

hellohahanarf: I do have two, but they have… um… stragglers.

NotaGranny: if it doesn’t bother you, leave it be!

Mr. Fab: only if you get the deep cleansing treatment as well. And let me record it.

And put it on my blog.

    ADW: oh that is BRILLIANT!

    (can we make it 8?)

deb: no home waxing, no way. And I’ve done all over color at home a gazillion times just fine. But highlights/low lights, need to be handled by professionals.

  14. DutchBitch October 26, 2007 10:18 am

I know I know… my brain got friend in the vomit accident yesterday… Forget I said it…

  15. Mom October 26, 2007 10:53 am

Baby it’s not just kids and I can say that now, to my utter amazement, since all of you are grown and gone.

I was just wondering the other day - HOW does a person work full time AND keep the dishwasher loadeded/unloaded, find time and the motivation to cook something, play the endless laundry cycle, clean that GODDAMN floor AGAIN!!! - vaccuum, deal with the what-is-that-yuck-in-the-corner-of-my-bathroom-sink-top, pay bills, make sure the garbage is taken out AND the recycling is put where it’s supposed to be put.

I’m at this queer stage in my life where I don’t want to just sit on my butt and watch TV and get my nails done but I don’t really know WHAT I want to fill my days. Love my job but need a break. Love my home and family but…

    Hellooooooo peri-menopause!

    Love you!

  16. Kimberly October 26, 2007 11:02 am

Yeah, I quit smoking every Jan 1st. It’s a holiday tradition

  17. Mr. Fabulous October 26, 2007 11:05 am

Sure, I don’t care. I don’t even know what that is. You can record me having my back waxed too, if you want. How bad can it be?

  18. RW October 26, 2007 12:26 pm

I just go down my list one drink at a time.

  19. HoosierGirl5 October 26, 2007 12:40 pm

I am guilty of the same problems. My house is a mess, I am off today, and what am I doing? Reading blogs and commenting. Not good.

    Have a great weekend,
    Jodi

  20. AmyD October 26, 2007 12:59 pm

    :lmfao:

Do what I do - wait until the kids are older and make them paint.

  21. hellohahanarf October 26, 2007 1:08 pm

better than waiting til the kids are older, convince mrs. avi to watch them while you have a painting party. you, hubby, deanna, her hubby and avi could knock out several rooms in no time. especially if you tell the workforce that plenty of beer & pizza awaits after a neat job well done. i love painting parties.

  22. Brandi October 26, 2007 1:13 pm

Don’t cut your hair princess, it’s great the way it is.

  23. Tug October 26, 2007 3:00 pm

Send the kids to Avi’s for a couple weeks.

    :lmfao:

  24. Y2K Survivor October 26, 2007 3:50 pm

YOu know… If I wanted to be ignored I would talk to my wife and kids! heh heh

  25. Miss Britt October 26, 2007 4:26 pm

Y2K: sorry, you were “awaiting moderation! LOL I’m not sure how I feel about the anti-smoking drugs. Not at this point anyway.

DutchBitch: LOL, vomit can do that to you.

Mom: ah, it’s not really the kids as much as the time wasters.

    Kimberly: better than turkey!

Mr. Fab: what are you doing next Saturday?

    RW: much like your recipes!

HoosierGirl5: but those things are fun!

    AmyD: at this rate…

hellohahanarf: better yet, I’ll watch the kids and convince them all to paint!

    Brandi: awww, thank you!

Tug: excellent idea. Except, I kind of love them and don’t want them scarred for life.

Y2K Survivor: if you link, you end up in moderation. I can’t help it, I swear!

  26. Poppy October 26, 2007 8:53 pm

Life without TV kinda rocks. Usually.

  27. Y2K October 26, 2007 11:49 pm

There! See..? Now all is well with the world and I can go to sleep tonight and dream, “What the fuck was she talking about ‘moderation’ for??”

  28. Rhys October 27, 2007 12:18 am

Hee! Yeah, time to get those priorities straight! Damn, you must be a cool mom. :)How long til your daughter starts ‘borrowing’ your awesome shoes, do you think?

  29. CP October 28, 2007 2:33 pm

I knew you wouldn’t have a party post up yet you dirty stay out! *mwah* love you!!!!!!!!

    *a very hung over*

    CP.

  30. Lisa October 28, 2007 7:29 pm

OMG…my backsplash in the kitchen has been half done for the past year and a half.

I cut off the hair…and love it.

Smoking? You don’t want me to go there but the Great American Smoke-out is in November…that the American Cancer Society’s thing. Might be a good day to aim for. Just saying.

Guacamole…girl. I have a kick ass recipe and I’m retarded in the kitchen. It’s the food processor that’s killing you. JUST SAY NO!

I’ll get the recipe to you. I even make my own freakin’ tortilla chips. Oh yeh! or Ole!

No f’in way am I working out…just start walking. Walking is better than nothing. Take some time like lunch time. Avitable gives you lunch time right?

Redoing the blog? Ugh, I did that this weekend and moved to a new domain. Oye. Didn’t you just do that a few months ago? There’s nothing wrong with your blog.

  31. Amber October 29, 2007 8:05 am

    Yeah, uhm….

I guess if you were… you know… Superwoman all that might happen in the near future!!!

Pace yourself, woman! You don’t give yourself nearly enough credit for all that you do. And you’ve only been living there for like, what, three months now or so? Everything will come together in due time. There’s only so much of you that can be spread and you’re spread pretty thin. It’s all good… your priorities will slowly get taken care of and then there will be a whole new list to take care of! :)

Breathe… relax… do the best you can and take each day as it comes. You’re doing a great job and I know that everyone is very proud of you. You’re one hell of an example as a woman, person, wife, and mother. Even though some days, it may not feel like it.

And uhm, the doctors say to not try and quit smoking when there’s a lot of stress going on in your life. I don’t know when the overwhelming amounts of stress will subside, but your chances of STAYING a quitter improve substantially when you quit and there’s not so much shit going on. Plus, you may lose your mind if you quit right now.

    Just sayin’…

(not that I don’t want you to quit smoking. It’s very bad for you. And I’m a smoker too, so I do understand).

  32. Miss Britt October 29, 2007 10:21 am

Poppy: yeah, I gave up TV for like 6 months earlier in the year. Got sooo much more done then.

Y2K: LOL, glad to ease your mind.

Rhys: I don’t know. But my son already tries them on.

CP: oh dear God no. I slept/lounged ALL DAMN DAY on Sunday!!

    (love you too!)

Lisa: well CLEARLY you are far more productive than me. :D

Amber: yeah, that’s kind of why I haven’t gotten serious about quitting yet.

  33. DeannaBanana October 29, 2007 12:16 pm

Dude, you can totally strike gauc off your list, its been done!

  34. Miss Britt October 29, 2007 12:38 pm

    Well, witnessed anyway! LOL

  35. Kelly October 29, 2007 12:50 pm

You know, I can’t even keep up with the volumous number of peole who orbit your world, so forgive me if this offer’s been made and I forgive you if you’re too busy to take me up on it, k?

I have in my hot little hand here (when I’m not typing, that is) my recipe for a dip that will put any guacamole recipe to shame. It has many of the same ingredients, but it’s so much better that here’s two things that have happened when I’ve made it in the past:

    1) The bowl of my dip is empty - always - way before the bowls of guacamole or onion or ranch dip surrounding it.

    2) I’ve been asked to withhold the dip till after dinner because it’s so freaking good that the host(ess) gets frustrated over everyone being too full on the dip to eat the meal (s)he prepared.

Drop me a line if you want to know how to make it. Then beware: it’s actually healthy if eaten in reasonable amounts, but the only way to regulate how much of it you eat is in how much of it you decide to make.

  36. hellohahanarf October 29, 2007 12:54 pm

hey, i want that recipe! britt, please pass it along iffin you get it. i don’t cook so i am all about taking tasty dips to gatherings.

  37. Friglet October 29, 2007 2:21 pm

That list could’ve come from my life! Both of them actually, the “to do” and the “reasons it ain’t gettin done”!
