Breeeeaaaaathing

by Miss Britt on August 16, 2007

So, today will be my first full day in the house.

I still have school clothes to buy, groceries to get (God willing I someday have a fridge to put them in) and a slew of other “stuff” to do.  But today I am here.  I mean, um, home.

Because today is the day my furniture comes in!  At least - the couch, love seat, end tables, cocktail table and lamps.  When today?  Ohhhhh…. sometime between 7am and 10pm.  No.  Seriously.  I shit you not.  That is the window they give you in exchange for “express delivery”.  And they refuse to call ahead to tell you they are on their way.  That would apparently violate the “you want it tomorrow? you MUST be inconvenienced” rule
I’m 27 years old and basically grounded.

But that’s OK.  I realized I hadn’t spent an entire day in the house since we moved in.  Which explains why I have yet to unpack my clothes, or my shoes, or put together my son’s room.  I’ve already started to acquire a pile of unopened mail here (how in the hell is that even possible?!?!)

School and work and more normal “life” starts back up on Monday, so a full day to really unpack, do laundry, clean up, etc. will be nice.  I may even hang a picture or two.

If I’m really lucky maybe someone will figure out where we packed the “special box” from the bedroom.

Psst... thanks for stopping by! I hope I didn't traumatize you too badly on your first visit. Remember to subscribe to my RSS feed if you want updates from the site!

I looked for that special box all during the unpacking and never found it. I wanted to scar your little brother for life.

Our special box was labeled MASTER BEDROOM CLOSET. And, was the only box to be labeled as such. Everything else was just labeled Master Bedroom.

The way that Amy and Adam describe you and your shoes, it’ll take you all day just to put your shoes away alone.

I hate the fucking rule about express delivery. I hate being grounded because I have to wait on someone else. I guess I’m impatient. :lmao:

Well, if the love seat and the cocktail table are there, you’re as good as settled!

One part of the culture shock you will begin to feel is that delivery guys like furniture movers and services in general (mechanics, tradesmen, etc) work at a different pace in FL than they do in IA, or most anywhere else. The big window for your delivery is simply looked upon in FL as “laid back.” In reality it’s because 96% of Floridians are buzzed all day long and the humidity generally discourages actual labor. You get used to it.

avitable: so my rummaging through YOUR master bedroom yesterday looking for it was unnecessary then?

AmyD: I opened that box yesterday. It had a robe and a shoe rack in it. :-(

Angel: they exaggerate. I am very efficient at putting shoes away. And the kids should be able to help with the less expensive pairs.

DutchBitch: definitely a lot further along!

RW: everyone keeps telling me that and I’m trying to figure out how in the hell anyone gets anything done here! Or earns any kind of actual living!

Don’t worry about the “special box.” The Law of Certainty states that one of your kids will find it first.

hellohahanarf: oh good Lord I am like the world’s least domesticated woman ever.

Lynda: lol, THAT was scheduled for Day 1. Priorities.

themuttprincess: thanks! I am, thus far!

Rick: and the Law Of My Children guarantees they will hide it away somewhere. And I’ll never see it again. Until my in-laws come to visit.

How are the kids doing with moving and all that? Is your son happy about a new school?

Sadly, I love to stay home. I wish I could make my living at home and just leave when I wanted to instead of because I have to.

Our “special box” always rode with us in our car so no parents or friends would accidentally unpack it.

I duct-taped the special box items to various places on my body.

Brandi: I’ve worked from home. There are definitely pros… AND cons.

Jen: now THAT is smart packing.

Rich: my husband refused to strap The Asian Jumboschlong to himself. Big wimp.

TrishK: my daughter did stay in her room a lot more today…
