A laundry list of sorts

by Miss Britt on June 8, 2007

Sometimes when you read someone’s blog, or chat with them via IM, or live next door to them for your entire life, you assume you know what they think and how they feel about everything.  You know where they stand on one issue, you know which jokes they laugh at, you know what kind of stringless thong they wear… and you use that information to fill in the gaps on anything else that may pop up.  We’re all profilers, I guess, by nature.  And it’s not a bad thing - it’s just human nature.

That being said,  I’ve been inspired to come clean.

* From a legal and social stand point, I am pro-choice.  I vote “pro-choice”.  But not because I am not firmly, morally, against abortion.  Not because I, personally, feel that because one body is in another body, the bigger body gets all the say so - necessarily.  But because I think it would be socially irresponsible at this point to throw a bunch of scared women and babies to the fucking wolves right now.  Because our society simply cannot afford to bear the burden of a ban on abortion.

* I support same-sex marriage.  And not because I don’t think it’s anyone’s business what goes on in the bedroom (although I don’t think it’s anyone’s business what goes on in the bedroom).   Marriage, from a legal standpoint, is not about what goes on in the bedroom.  I support same-sex marriage being legalized because I believe if anyone - hetero, homo, or otherwise - wants to stand up and claim to have all of the same rights and privileges as I do as a married person, than they damn well better be willing to suck it up and take on the same responsibilities.  Extending legal marriage to anyone who is willing to make that commitment STRENGTHENS marriage, in my opinion.

* I am for organized religion.  I love being Catholic.  I think there is a reason that man seems to be hard wired to a) feel a connection to something bigger than themselves and b) be a part of a group.  Religion is not a bad thing.  Does it get fucked up?  Absolutely.  And so does marriage and parenthood and interior decorating.  That’s life.  That being said, I really and truly don’t care if you’re NOT into organized religion.  I wandered down a twisted path to find what fits for me.  I whole heartedly embrace your right to your own path and your own fit.

*I abhor bigotry of any kind.  I laugh at racists jokes.  I tried desperately to find another way to categorize those jokes - but it is what it is.  But laughing at a stereotype does not mean I’m OK with applying those stereotypes to individual people.  There are places in life for black and white.  Judging a human being’s character and personality is not one of them.

*I believe that people will let you down.  However, I refuse to live my life waiting for someone to fuck me over.  People fuck up.  I do it, you do it, we ALLLL do it.  It’s not because we are evil, horrible people waiting for the next chance to take someone out.  It’s because we’re Human.  Granted, there are shitty people out there and once you find them you’d be best to keep them the hell away from yourself.  But most people?  Most people really, truly and deeply are just not that bad.  I mean don’t get me wrong, most people bug the SHIT out of me and I don’t want to invite them over for margaritas… but I’m not watching over my shoulder waiting for them to pounce, either.

*I believe it takes a village.  To raise a child, to strengthen a marriage, to build a house, to run a society… all of it.  We are not put on this earth all by ourselves for a reason.  And while I like to think that the world would be better off if my children - and your children, for that matter - grew up to be clones of me, I have a sneaking suspicion that may not be the most practical of plans.  While I expect to be the biggest influence on my kids and the final say, and I get frustrated that my mother-in-law feeds my kids sugar and my mother lets them roll in the mud… I’m glad they will have someone else to teach them things that I don’t know.

*I believe in the Constitution.  Fiercely.  I believe in free speech and the right to bear arms and the freedom of the press and the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  I’m fairly certain some of those things aren’t actually in The Constitution - but you get my drift.  I may not like that you are loud mouthed, ignorant, chauvinistic prick.  But I will defend to the death you’re right to be one.  I refuse to give up my civil liberties - or yours - in an effort to make myself feel safer.  I will make damn sure you have your civil liberties, to ensure that I will always have mine.
*I am against the war.  I am pretty much against war, period.  But especially this one.

*I am very, very proud of my sister who is in the Air Force and my friend who is on his second (or is it third?) tour in Iraq.  The level of commitment it takes to sign up for something, not knowing what exactly you’ll be asked to do or where exactly you’ll be asked to do it, on little more than principle alone… that astounds me.

*I am a Democrat.  And not because I don’t know any better.  Not because I like taxes.  Not because I am a fan of Big Government.  But because we are going to HAVE government and taxes and bull shit.  As long as we are going to have it, I prefer to have it for providing for the poor, providing solid education, building roads, and catching the people who fall through the cracks of our “social outreach”.

*Animal are not people too.  Technically, people are animals too.  But we’re not the fucking SAME.  I don’t think you should be cruel to an animal - I mean duh.  Cruelty for cruelty’s sake is just wrong.  And if you’re an animal lover? Great.  But do not piss on my steak, throw paint on my fur, or bring your fucking puppy into the hardware store!  No, I don’t want to pet him.  Do I ask you to hold my children?

Hm. Well.  This is getting quite long.  Have any questions about where I stand on anything else?  Just ask, I will obviously tell you.

I used to fancy myself to be a bundle of contradictions.  But now, looking back over this list, I don’t think I’m really much of a contradiction at all.  In fact, it seems what I AM… is my mother.

Psst... thanks for stopping by! I hope I didn't traumatize you too badly on your first visit. Remember to subscribe to my RSS feed if you want updates from the site!

Now that we have that out in the open and we’ve all aired our “dirty laundry” - let’s get back to vaginas and lost tampons.

  2. Mr. Fabulous June 8, 2007 5:25 am

Wow…great post. Aside from not being as big on organized religion as you are (although I see the need for it) and the fact that I am a registered Independent (although a Libertarian at heart) we are pretty much in agreement on everything.

I think this was a great idea. Perhaps I will do the same in the future.

Holy crap…this might mean you are my hero…

  3. avitable June 8, 2007 6:18 am

Where do you stand on boob flashing?

  4. Angel June 8, 2007 7:31 am

I agree with you on most subjects as well, and I might have to steal this idea from you too.

  5. sam June 8, 2007 7:43 am

    Great list!

I agree with you, once again!

  6. Dave2 June 8, 2007 8:12 am

Awwwww… a puppy! I wanna hold the puppy!

I would not, however, trust me to hold your children…

  7. Rhys June 8, 2007 8:28 am

No puppies? Now see, here I thought you would’ve been a pink poodle kind of girl. The things you learn!

  8. Rhys June 8, 2007 8:34 am

I forgot to mention my favorite line: “We’re all profilers, I guess, by nature. ”

Very true. It’s what gives us insight and unfortunately, short-sightedness, depending on the situation.

But still…you would look so cute carrying around a pink poodle…

    - Pro-choice.

    - Support same sex marriage.

    - Don’t believe in organized religion

    - Racism pisses me off probably more than anything. I’ve had to deal with a lot since my child is part black.

    - People let you down. (Look at my family) but not all people. I’m very cautious about who I trust.

    - It takes a village.

    - I believe in the Constitution. And I believe our government is currently not following it.

    - Against the war.

    - Democrat.

    - I love my cats.

Ya had me either agreeing with you or agreeing to disagree with you until that very last point.

I eat meat (because in my head it is actually respectful to do so… don’t ask), I don’t throw paint on fur even though I don’t wear it, but my kitties are my kids. I would (and have) sacrifice(d) a lot for my kids.

It devastates me when there is anything wrong with them. I die a little when one of my kids dies. I mourn their loss and celebrate their life. I throw them birthday parties (but I don’t invite outsiders). I take tons of photos of them. I take them in for their yearly physicals, give them each their favorite foods, taken Ripley to get her hair cut with her favorite groomer, “Auntie Joanne”. I even go downstairs to the litter boxes with Georgie and tell her what a good girl she is when she pees and poops for her mama.

I don’t ask people to pet my kids because I don’t want anyone touching them at all, so I’ve told them to run far, far away if any person other than me or Hay is in the house.

Some people are built for human kids and some people are built for furry kids. Some people are even built for a mixture of the two. Right now and perhaps permanently I’m firmly planted in the furry kids only category.

I can’t not believe how much I agree with this post! WOW! is all I can say.

  12. Maisha June 8, 2007 9:23 am

    this post is so serious.

…and then i get to the last part…”no i dont want to pet your dog!Do i ask you to hold my kids?”

    bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

  13. RW June 8, 2007 10:50 am

It’s OK Miss Britt… I still like you!

  14. Miss Britt June 8, 2007 11:04 am

AmyD: Why are you always trying to stick me in a little box? I’m MORE than that! SOB

(shit, I need new smileys - I don’t have a Sob smiley!!!! OHHH the HORROR!!!!! [insert sob smiley again here])

Mr. Fabulous: people who know definitions better than I are always telling me I’m actually a Libertarian. But, I mean, you can’t VOTE that way… that’s like, like, voting for Nader! You might as well just sit your ass at home.

    avitable: what’s your offer?

    Angel: steal away girlfriend!

sam: why are you trying to pick a fight with me? Why can’t anyone just ever come here and say “me too”.

    Fuck, with the drama!

Dave2: but would you trust me to hold your monkey?

Rhys: I would look SMASHING with a little pink toy poodle. Although I’m not aware that they actually MAKE pink poodles.

And as long as someone else wants to take care of it, I’m down with having a live animal as an accessory.

heather: I just want to say I PinkPuffyHeart your comment

(and FUCK I NEED new Smileys!!!)

Poppy: and that’s cool. I mean - I don’t GET the whole “animals are people too” thing, but whatever. I don’t get anal either but I don’t begrudge you the right to, ya know?

Just don’t get all up in my shit if I don’t want to swoon over your animals. Or I will make you hold my toddler. And change her. And pet her and shit.

pnbzmom: do you also eat no carbs and ass tons of salt??! We could be twins!! YAY!!

Maisha: that doesn’t sound serious??

RW: Oh thank you. Becaus if you abandon me now I just may have to end it all.

BTW, did I ever tell you how much you remind me of my favoritest person who ever lived ever? Seriously.

  15. themuttprincess June 8, 2007 11:10 am

I agree with some and disagree with others.

I still like you regardless of your not wanting to pet my animals. Sigh.

  16. avitable June 8, 2007 11:11 am

I don’t know - what do you want? We can work something out.

  17. pnbzmom June 8, 2007 11:42 am

I own the Carbohydrates Addict’s Diet book!! OMG I think I am you

  18. RW June 8, 2007 12:18 pm

    Me?

  19. Joefish June 8, 2007 1:45 pm

I’ve never understood people who oppose gay marriage because they feel it “diminishes the institution of marriage.” I really don’t see how more people getting married makes marriage anything less than what it would otherwise be.

Just curious - if I brought you a puppy to pet, would you ask me to hold your children?

  20. Miss Britt June 8, 2007 2:29 pm

themuttprincess: What?! You’re not a Miss Britt Clone?!!?

    Pfft. The nerve!

    avitable:

    Here’s the deal.

    1. Write down a number you think is reasonable on a piece of paper.
    2. Add three zeros to the end of it.
    3. Double that.
    4. Send it over for me to consder.

pnbzmom: In that case, I’ve been meaning to tell you - can you stop putting your thong on inside out? It’s unflattering. And itchy.

    RW: my Poppi, actually

Joefish: if by Puppy, you mean Penis, then… well, this is not that kind of site Joe.

  21. RW June 8, 2007 3:03 pm

That’s cool - since I am old enough to be your father…

  22. Miss Britt June 8, 2007 3:15 pm

RW: heh, um, eh… actually that was my GRAND father…

  23. Joefish June 8, 2007 3:28 pm

No, I was actually talking about a puppy. But a good idea is a good idea!

  24. Brandi June 8, 2007 3:42 pm

Would it bother you if my dog was with me at the hardware store but we completely fucking ignored you?

  25. themuttprincess June 8, 2007 4:10 pm

Thankfully for everyone I am not a clone. However, if I could chose anyone to consider to be a clone of, it probably would be you.

  26. RW June 8, 2007 4:20 pm

Yeah well… he was cool too.

  27. usedtobeme June 8, 2007 7:53 pm

I am stealing this idea for a post. You’ve inspired me. Or I’m bored.

  28. debkitty June 8, 2007 11:09 pm

I love this and I agree whole heartedly with most of what you said.

  29. jane June 9, 2007 12:51 am

This is a ballsy post. The thing I’m most impressed with is that you know why you have every belief that you do.

Your comment section is always a hoot to read.
