So. Back to taking over the world and using my blog as a means of infiltration.
(You all thought I was fucking with you about The Master Plan, didn’t you?)
Anyway, as I prepare to launch Phase 1: Unleashing The Blog To The Masses - I figure I better get the basics taken care of. I’ve heard a lot of talk about feeds and subscribers and other such shit that I don’t full understand. It seemed like the appropriate place to start - make it easy for people to read me and for me to keep tabs on who and how many are doing just that.
So, I started my research. I came across some information about feed burning or burning feed. Apparently, any blogger whose any blogger burns their feed.
Fuck. I can sooo burn my feed.
Unfortunately, my office now reeks of burnt metal and melted plastic, and the F1 key on my keyboard isn’t working right. And I’m still not confident I’ve burnt my feed sufficiently.
Moving on. Bloglines. I hate lines. But I am trying to remember that if this all works out according to Plan, I’ll always be first in line. And lines aren’t so bad if you get to be first, right? In fact, they are kind of nice when you are first and you can look at all the poor smacks behind you with that face that says “I know, it sucks, and I have loads of compassion for you in my heart… sucka”
But, I digress.
Here’s my point. I have no fucking clue what I just spent the last two hours doing. None. I just wanna make it so that…
a) I can have hundreds of people subscribed to my site, enjoying daily doses of brainwashing, like Chinese water torture
b) if possible, I’d like to be able to go one place and read the blogs that have new shit on them. Because blogrolling’s little “fresh” icon sucks ass and it lies. LIES I tell you! Lies!! I hate re-checking the same blog 50 fucking times because I don’t know if they have anything new posted and I am desperate for something to do with my afternoon.
So, um, dear readers… could someone kindly hold my hand and walk me through this fucking process? Please?
I pay in cookies and nudie pictures.
(I knew that would get you two)
Updated to add: see, I knew the nudie pics would get someone. I think - or at least I thought - I had it all figured out. However, when I go to try to subscribe to my own feed via bloglines to test everything out, it’s not the feedburner feed that comes up - OR my oh so cool new comments feed. Hmpfh.
Psst... thanks for stopping by! I hope I didn't traumatize you too badly on your first visit. Remember to subscribe to my RSS feed if you want updates from the site!

I’m sure Joefish can explain it better than I can, but Bloglines lets you subscribe to blogs you’re interested in. Just add each blog’s feed to the Feed tab, and whenever you log in, you’ll see which ones are updated.
For example, I’ve added your feed in my Bloglines, so when I log in, I’ll know if your blog has been updated or not and if it has, I can either read it in Bloglines or click on the link and read the posts directly from your blog.
The tricky part is that not every blog has a feed set up so you may have to hunt it down or ask someone for help with it. If you see something that says RSS somewhere on their page, that’s usually it. Just right-click, copy link location, then add it to your Bloglines.
I hope that made sense.
reader.google.com is my favorite when forced to use an online reader.
I don’t know much about this sort of thing. I just came over here to worship you and bask in your fabulousness.
I am getting in on the groveling ground floor for when you take over everything.
Bloglines is nice because you can subscribe to any site with a feed, and then when you check out your bloglines account, you’ll see anyone whose feed has been updated. When you have a blogroll of 100 or more, it makes it so much easier to only spend your time reading the new posts. You can even put a little button on your browser that allows you to subscribe without going to Bloglines’s site.
Re: FeedBurner - Are you signed up with them yet? Ideally the thing to do is to redirect your WP feed url to your FeedBurner url. Ordered List’s FeedBurner Redirect plugin makes this a snap.
Re: Feed readers - Bloglines is the most popular choice. I’m just starting to check out Google Reader and it seems nice. What I’m using right now is Gregarius (sic). It’s basically Bloglines, but it runs on my server so I have full control over how it works.
Joe - I am signed up with Feedburner. The rest of what you said about Feedburner is making absolutely no sense to me.
I’ll see if Google can help me sort it out. LOL
Normally the address of your feed is http://miss-britt.com/?feed=rss2
Your FeedBurner url will be something like http://feeds.feedburner.com/BrittLikesDildos
Ideally you’d want to link up the two with Odered List’s FeedBurner plugin for WP: http://orderedlist.com/wordpress-plugins/feedburner-plugin/
With that plugin you don’t need to change anything on your blog… all your feed traffic is automatically and transparently sent to your FeedBurner url. If you ever decide to stop using FeedBurner, just deactivate the plugin and everything goes back to normal without any interruption to your readers.
(PS - Don’t be afraid to ask for more detailed help if you want it.)
Oh - I know what else I was going to ask you… how did you have an option to subscribe to your comments? Of all the blogs I added to bloglines - yours was the only one with that option.
The RSS links are part of my template, but the e-mail subscriptions are through Mark Jaquith’s Subscribe To Comments plugin.
I think I just got a comment feed thingie from Feedburner too when I set up that plugin you gave me (WHICH, I did all by myself - GO ME!!)
personally, I made my feed with Feedburner. it’s as easy as entering your URL, hitting enter and then linking to the feed URL you just created on your blog with one of their little buttons.
and bloglines? definitely rocks. that’s pretty much all I read from now.
I’m all for the cookies…. I use google reader. A lot of people diss it but it’s quick and I haven’t had any problems with it at all, unlike bloglines.
I like bloglines. Except I hate when it randomly either A) doesn’t update one or two blogs or B) totally updates someones blog and it will show 2-50 new entries. I’ll go there and none were really new.
That’s just irritating, but not more so than clicking 50 links a day!
And for some reason your blog will not update on bloglines for me.
Google Reader is kind of slick, but the interface can be dog slow.
Although the Greasemonkey script that integrates Reader with Gmail is pretty damn cool.
I am having problems with Bloglines. It doesn’t always update correctly letting me someone has a new post.
I have no clue either but I subscribe to them. I think I should be checking them but then I don’t know what I am looking for anyway so I don’t bother. lol
My feed got burned once. I’ll never forget that trip to the free clinic.
I cannot get my blog to be feed burned. I have had great success with Bloglines once I dispensed with the idea that how it worked made any sense. So one afternoon I goofed around with all the buttons, swore quite a bit and eventually made it my blogging slave. I wish you the same sort of luck in your quest to take over the world.
Ok. So I come to your site every day. Isn’t that worth a nudie pic or two? I have to be skilled in RSS feeds to earn pornography?
Sheesh.
The unfairness of it all.
Note to self:
must find nudie pics that I can pass of as my own to share with loyal readers.
xoxo
